Learning Outcomes

At the University of Utah

How outcomes connect — from courses to programs to institutional goals.

The Alignment Framework

How Learning Outcomes Connect

Learning outcomes at the University of Utah form a connected system across three levels. Institutional Outcomes (the Exceptional Educational Experience (E3) Framework) set the broadest aspirations. Programs demonstrate alignment through their own outcomes and General Education Learning Outcomes (GELOs). At the course level, outcomes connect to program goals through mapping and aggregation, while a continuous improvement cycle keeps the system responsive.

Alignment and Assessment

Programs align outcomes to the E³ Framework and assess their contribution to institutional goals.

Mapping and Aggregation

Course outcomes map to program outcomes; evidence aggregates upward for program-wide assessment.

Continuous Improvement

Student evidence and assessment data feed back into curriculum enhancement and teaching practice.

  Why This Matters for Faculty

Your course outcomes are the foundation of this system. They map upward to program goals and ultimately to the E3 Framework — making assessment meaningful and the student experience coherent across the institution.

How it Works

Student learning is structured across three levels. Together, these levels support alignment, assessment, and continuous improvement.
