The Bennion Center is all about community.  Their mission is to inspire and mobilize people to strengthen communities through learning, scholarship, and advocacy.  Whether you have a few minutes in between classes, an occasional hour on a Saturday morning, or time to engage every week, there are plenty of ways for you to get involved.

  • Student-Directed Programs - Get involved with the Bennion Center by choosing from one of nearly 50 Student-Directed Programs to make a positive impact in our community.  Each program works with a local community partner organization to make a collective impact in areas such as education, environment, health, social justice, and arts.
  • Alternative Breaks and Travel Programs- Alternative Breaks promotes lifelong activism by providing students with the experiences and skills necessary to build and organize communities through service, education, dialogue, and reflection.

Travel programs give those who want to be a traveler, rather than a tourist, the opportunity to visit distant communities and engage in hands-on experiential learning.  The Bennion Center offers travel programs domestically and internationally over fall, spring, and summer breaks.

  • Utah Reads - The mission of the Utah Reads program at the University of Utah is to provide effective, quality tutoring in literacy to the elementary-aged students of our community partners.
  • Bennion Scholars - Bennion Scholars apply their academic interests to meet a real social concern through a Capstone Project with a community partner and faculty mentor.
  • Saturday Service Projects, Drop-in Service, & More - Got 15 minutes between classes or a Saturday morning you can spare?  The Bennion Center can help you turn that time into a service project that benefits our community and provides you with a sense of accomplishment beyond getting your homework done.  Your classroom experience will be deeper and more meaningful when you engage with the community in projects that benefit children, refugees, people who are homeless, or programs with great goals but a shortage of volunteer help.

Using a pan-African lens, the Black Cultural Center seeks to counteract persistent campus-wide and global anti-blackness. The Black Cultural Center works to holistically enrich, educate, and advocate for students, faculty, and staff through Black centered programming, culturally affirming educational initiatives, and retention strategies.

Immigration is a complex phenomenon with broad impact—those who are directly affected by it, as well as those who are indirectly affected by their relationships with family members, friends, and loved ones. If your immigration status presents obstacles that prevent you from engaging in specific activities or fulfilling specific course criteria, confidential arrangements may be requested from the Dream Center.

Arrangements with the Dream Center will not jeopardize your student status, your financial aid, or any other part of your residence. The Dream Center offers a wide range of resources to support undocumented students (with and without DACA) as well as students from mixed-status families.

Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion is deeply committed to enhancing the success of diverse faculty, students, and staff, as part of our broader goal to enrich the educational experiences and success of all members of our university community. This division – lead by Vice President Mary Ann Villarreal (Links to an external site.) – is comprised of leaders, experts, and educators who drive the University’s effort to create a safe and welcoming campus climate.

With our new leadership, the Vice President for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion oversees the entities across the entire University of Utah including the American Indian Resource Center; Black Cultural Center; Center for Ethnic Student Affairs; Dream Center; LGBT Resource Center; Office for Health Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion; and Office for Inclusive Excellence. Additionally, the office partners with all colleges, departments and the broader community to help develop initiatives aimed at fostering more awareness, advocacy, and action.

The Office for Inclusive Excellence is here to engage, support, and advance an environment fostering the values of respect, diversity, equity, inclusivity, and academic excellence for students in our increasingly global campus community. They also handle reports of bias in the classroom as outlined below:

Bias or hate incidents consist of speech, conduct, or some other form of expression or action that is motivated wholly or in part by prejudice or bias whose impact discriminates, demeans, embarrasses, assigns stereotypes, harasses, or excludes individuals because of their race, color, ethnicity, national origin, language, sex, size, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, disability, age, or religion.
